Nice on a budget: our tips

Nice has a reputation as a chic destination, but it can be explored very well without breaking the bank. Beaches, Castle Hill, the Paillon promenade, affordable museums, transport for less than €2: here are our tips for enjoying the city on a tight budget.

Free Activities in Nice

The best of Nice doesn't cost a thing:

• The public beaches, of course, all free and pebbly;
• The Promenade des Anglais, 7 km of seafront;
• The Castle Hill park (92 m above sea level) and its panorama, reachable on foot or by public lift;
• The Paillon promenade, 12 hectares of gardens in the heart of the city, open from 7am to 11pm in summer;
• The Mont Boron park (57 ha, 11 km of trails) and the panorama from Fort du Mont-Alban;
• The gardens of the Cimiez Arenas, around the Matisse Museum;
• The Sainte-Réparate cathedral and the churches of the Old Town, free to enter.

Affordable Museums

The municipal museums charge admission, but prices are reasonable: €5 for the archaeology museum in Cimiez, €12 for the Matisse Museum (recently renovated), and the 4-day Museum Pass for €15 gives access to 9 museums.

Good deal: free for under-18s and students (with proof of status) at municipal museums. Note that the MAMAC is currently closed for renovation work.

Getting Around on a Budget

The tram and bus cost €1.70 per ticket (valid for 74 minutes including connections), €7 for a day pass and €20 for a 7-day pass. The airport is reached by tram T2 for €1.70. Children under 11 travel free.

The Lime and Pony bike-sharing network has replaced the former Vélo Bleu: pay-per-use via app. The centre and the Promenade are very easy to explore on foot.

Eating Cheaply Like a Local

Socca, Nice's signature speciality, costs just a few euros a slice at the stalls of the Old Town. The Cours Saleya and Libération markets are great for putting together picnics of local produce (fruit, vegetables, fish), far cheaper than eating at a restaurant.

Bakeries and beach baskets offer simple, budget-friendly lunches facing the sea.

Free Events

• The Summer Evenings of the Alpes-Maritimes department (06): free concerts and shows at 9pm, from late June to late August;
• The Fest'OFF of the Nice Jazz Festival: free brass bands and concerts in the streets (mid-July);
• The Sunday concerts of the Municipal Orchestra at the bandstand in Jardin Albert 1er;
• The Fête de la musique in June, and the 14 July celebrations on the Promenade.

A note on the carnival: the grandstands are paid (€23-28) and so are the pedestrian zones (€7-14), but dressing up from head to toe gives free access to the pedestrian zones!

How Much to Budget per Day?

As a rough guide, excluding accommodation, an adult can enjoy Nice for less than €25-30 a day: transport (€1.70-7), simple meals (socca, market, bakery) and free activities. Restaurant prices vary: the city remains reasonable if you avoid the tables along the seafront.
