Monaco and Monte-Carlo: a day trip from Nice

Monaco has this magic about it: it takes just 23 little minutes to get there. No car, no tolls, no stress: a TER along the sea, and the scenery changes completely. From the solid buildings of Nice to the cliffs of the Rock, you wonder where you have landed. The Principality is perfect for a one-day visit — and without spending a fortune, contrary to its reputation.

The train: the only right answer

The TER Nice-Ville → Monaco-Monte-Carlo takes 23 minutes, with about sixty trains a day. The station is perfectly placed: you exit at the foot of the Rock, on the Parvis Sainte-Dévote side, and Port Hercule is 5 minutes away on foot.

The bus works too (Zou ! lines 600 Nice-Monaco-Menton and 602 via Èze village), but the train remains more reliable and more pleasant: the track hugs the sea for a good part of the journey.

A planning tip: morning trains are packed with cruise passengers in summer. If you can aim for a departure around 9:30-10 am, you travel in more comfort.

Morning: the Rock, before the crowds

Start with the Rock, old Monaco, while the alleys are still cool and the terraces almost empty. The Prince's Palace opens its State Apartments from March to mid-October: state rooms, frescoes and a real glimpse into the life of the princely family, without the palace hysteria. Count €13 (€8 for ages 6-17, free before).

At 11:55 am sharp, don't miss the changing of the guard on the Palace square: the Prince's Carabiniers, in white summer uniform, change guard to the sound of drums. It's free, lasts twenty minutes, and children love it.

Right next door, Notre-Dame-Immaculée cathedral (1875, Roman-Byzantine style) houses the tombs of the Princes, including Rainier III and Grace Kelly. You might sometimes see a princely wedding — without waiting for one, the place is worth it for its light.

Afternoon: the Casino and the Exotic Garden

After lunch on Port Hercule, head for the Monte-Carlo Casino. Important nuance: you don't visit the Casino like a museum. In the morning (10 am-1 pm), cultural tours (€20) reveal the Belle Époque rooms without the games. From 2 pm, the gaming rooms open to players — €20 entry including €10 of gaming credit. 18 and over, original ID, and smart dress required: no shorts, no flip-flops, no ripped jeans. They don't joke about the dress code in Monte-Carlo.

For the view, climb to the Exotic Garden (€12 for the garden, €15 with the Observatory cave): century-old cacti hanging from a cliff above the sea, and the best panorama of the day. Closes at 7 pm in summer.

The Oceanographic Museum, clinging to the Rock's cliff, remains the great family classic: sharks, turtles and real research work behind the scenery.

Monaco and Èze: the combined day

The Riviera's winning duo: Èze in the morning, Monaco in the afternoon. Bus line 602 does exactly this route (Èze village → Monaco). Climb to the perched village for the panorama (Èze exotic garden: €8), take the bus down, and finish with the Rock. Our Èze guide helps you organise the first part.

Good to know

• Day budget: transport ~€10, Palace €13, Casino or Garden €12-20 — far from the "Monaco is unaffordable" image;
• In summer: Monaco is overrun between 10 am and 4 pm by cruise passengers. The Rock in the morning, the Casino in the late afternoon, and you keep a head start;
• In the evening, the Casino rooms light up — even without playing, the Casino square at nightfall is worth a look before taking the train back.
