Monaco and Monte-Carlo: a day trip from Nice

Monaco has the magic of being reached in just 23 short minutes. No car, no toll, no stress: a TER train along the sea, and the scenery changes completely. From the grand buildings of Nice to the cliffs of the Rock, you wonder where you have ended up. The Principality can be visited perfectly in a day, and without emptying your wallet, despite its reputation.

The Train: the Only Good Answer

The TER from Nice-Ville to Monaco-Monte-Carlo takes 23 minutes, with about sixty trains a day. The station is ideally located: you step out at the foot of the Rock, on the Sainte-Dévote forecourt side, and the Port Hercule is 5 minutes away on foot.

The bus also works (Zou! lines 600 Nice-Monaco-Menton and 602 which passes through Èze village), but the train remains more reliable and pleasant: the line runs along the sea for much of the journey.

Planning tip: morning trains leave packed with cruise passengers in summer. If you can aim for a departure around 9:30-10am, the journey is more comfortable.

Morning: the Rock, Before the Crowds

Start with the Rock, old Monaco, when the streets are still cool and the terraces almost empty. The Princely Palace opens its State Apartments from March to mid-October: reception rooms, frescoes and a real glimpse of the life of the princely family, without the hysteria of the palaces. Allow €13 (€8 for ages 6-17, free under 6).

At 11:55 sharp, don't miss the changing of the guard on the Palace Square: the Carabiniers du Prince, in their white summer uniforms, change the guard to the sound of drums. It's free, lasts twenty minutes, and children love it.

Right next door, the Cathedral of Our Lady Immaculate (1875, Romano-Byzantine style) houses the tombs of the Princes, including Rainier III and Grace Kelly. Sometimes you come across a royal wedding, though you should not count on it; the place is worth a visit for its light.

Afternoon: the Casino and the Exotic Garden

After lunch at the Port Hercule, head to the Casino de Monte-Carlo. An important nuance: you don't visit the Casino like a museum. In the morning (10am-1pm), cultural visits (€20) reveal the Belle Époque rooms without the gaming tables.

From 2pm, the rooms open to players, entry €20 including €10 of gaming credit. Minimum age 18, original photo ID, and smart dress required: no shorts, no flip-flops, no torn jeans. Monte-Carlo takes its dress code seriously.

For the view, climb to the Exotic Garden (€12 for the garden, €15 with the Observatory cave): centuries-old cacti clinging to a cliff above the sea, and the best panorama of the day. Closes at 7pm in summer.

The Oceanographic Museum, perched on the cliff of the Rock, remains the great classic for families: sharks, turtles and genuine research behind the displays.

Monaco and Èze: the Combined Day

The winning pairing of the Riviera: Èze in the morning, Monaco in the afternoon. Bus line 602 makes exactly this trip (Èze village → Monaco). Good to Know

• Daily budget: transport about €10, Palace €13, Casino or Garden €12-20, far from the image of “Monaco out of reach”;
• In summer: Monaco is overrun between 10am and 4pm by cruise passengers. The Rock in the morning, the Casino late in the day, and you stay one step ahead;
• In the evening, the Casino rooms light up, even without gambling; the Casino square after dark is worth seeing before you take the train back.
