Èze from Nice: complete guide for a successful visit
Suspended between sea and mountain, Èze is the Riviera's most spectacular trip: a medieval village with mineral alleys, an exotic garden clinging to the cliff and a 360° panorama. All half an hour from Nice, without a car.
There are villages you visit, and this one must be earned: Èze is perched at 429 metres, clinging to its cliff between the sea and the Grande Corniche. Its pedestrian stone alleys, artisan shops and exotic garden hanging over the void make it one of the most beautiful stops on the coast. And contrary to popular belief, you can get up there very easily without a car.
How to get there from Nice
Two main options, both by public transport:
- The train then the Nietzsche path: TER to Èze-sur-Mer station (a few minutes from Nice-Ville), then a 2.1 km climb on the Nietzsche path — 1h to 1h30, about 350 m of elevation gain. It's the most spectacular arrival, and the most sporty: bring good shoes;
- Bus 82 or 83: departure from Vauban (bus 82) or Baie des Fourmis (bus 83), direct climb to the village and the Plateau de la Justice. It's the gentle option, for families and hot days.
By car, parking is paid and saturated in season: the bus remains the best ally.
The village: a vertical walk
You enter Èze through the city gate and climb: cobbled alleys, arches, art galleries and artisan shops follow one another up to the baroque church, decorated with altarpieces and trompe-l'œil. It's also the kingdom of perfume houses and workshops — you go in for the scent, you come out an hour later.
Local tip: come early in the morning (before the coach tours arrive, around 10 am) or at the end of the day. In between, the alleys are an anthill.
The exotic garden: the 360° view
At the top of the village, the exotic garden is the main attraction: century-old cacti and agaves perched on the cliff edge, with the sea stretching to the horizon. Open every day (9 am-7:30 pm in summer, reduced hours in winter), it costs €10 (€6 for ages 12-17, free before). The viewpoint photo alone is worth the ticket price.
Around the village
Two natural extensions:
- the Plateau de la Justice, a departmental park above the village (terminus of buses 82/83), for an easy loop facing the Alps;
- the descent via the Savaric path, from the Grande Corniche to the sea, to reach Èze beach and the station — the return by train completes the loop.
Where to eat
Èze's big address is the Chèvre d'Or, twice starred, hanging over the sea — for an exceptional dinner, not a quick lunch. For a simple break, the Campagne and the Mas Provençal do honour to Mediterranean cuisine, and the Petit Loup Specialty Coffee serves the village's best coffee.
How long to allow
Allow a comfortable half-day: the climb, the village, the garden and a lunch break. Pairing with Monaco (bus 602 then train) or a descent to the coast makes a great full day.
