Nice enjoys a Mediterranean climate that makes it visitable all year round. But depending on whether you are after beaches, hiking, culture or lower prices, some months are clearly better than others.
The short answer: the best time to visit Nice runs from May to September, with the best compromise in June and September: warm weather, a swimmable sea, more manageable crowds and prices lower than in July and August. July and August are the months for swimming and nightlife, at the price of big crowds. Winter stays mild and sunny, ideal for the Nice Carnival.

The best time to visit Nice
The tourist season runs from May to September, but each month offers a different balance between weather, crowds and prices. The choice depends mainly on what you want to do while you're there.
Visiting Nice in May
Often one of the most beautiful months: the sun is already generous, the air is mild (17 °C on average, up to 25 °C in the sun) and rain becomes rare. The sea is still cool (17 °C): swimming is possible for the hardy, though it is not the main reason to travel.
It's a perfect period for sightseeing and hiking: the museums and hinterland villages are still quiet. Tourists haven't yet taken over the city and hotels remain affordable.

Visiting Nice in June
The best beach / sightseeing / price compromise of the whole year. June heralds summer: long days, water warming up quickly (20 °C), pleasant beaches and still reasonable temperatures (20 °C on average, 28 °C at the hottest point of the afternoon).
June's advantage over July-August: the water is still lovely after winter and visitor numbers have not yet peaked. It's the ideal time to combine beach, museums and discoveries in the hinterland without facing the crowds.

Visiting Nice in July
The heart of summer: exceptional weather, water at 24 °C, high UV index and a city fully geared up for the tourist season. Outdoor cultural events follow one after another and nightlife is in full swing.
The downsides are real: intense heat (it's not unusual to exceed 35 °C in the sun), record crowds, traffic jams and hotel prices rising sharply. If you struggle with heat or crowds, go for June or September instead.

Visiting Nice in August
The weather stays excellent until mid-August, with the sea at its warmest (25 °C): this is the best period for swimming all year. From mid-August onward, temperatures become a little milder and a pleasant light breeze blows along the seafront.
Expect the same crowds as in July: packed beaches, traffic jams and fully booked restaurants. Prices remain at their highest until the last days of the month.

Visiting Nice in September
For many, the best time to come: the return to school cuts crowds while the climate remains exceptional. The thermometer can easily climb to around 30 °C, the sea stays at 23 °C and a gentle breeze sets in.
Decisive advantages: hotel and transport prices drop noticeably compared with July-August, and the beaches regain some room to breathe. The only caution: traffic jams around school pick-up times at the end of the afternoon.

Swimming season 2026 in Nice
Nice's beaches are supervised every summer by lifeguards. For the 2026 season, the City of Nice opens lifeguard posts from 1 July to 31 August, from 9am to 6:30pm, then some posts remain open in September, from 9am to 6pm.
- Six beaches are supervised until 31 August: Sainte-Hélène, Bambou, Magnan, Poincarré, Blue Beach and Beau Rivage.
- Five more run until 13 September: Ponchettes, Tour Rouge, Forum, Carras and Centenaire.
- Water access ropes are installed on 10 beaches until 30 September to make it easier to get out of the water over the pebble slope.
- All municipal beaches have been smoke-free since 2024; two beaches welcome dogs all year round: La Lanterne and Lenval.
- Two beaches are accessible for people with reduced mobility: Carras and Centenaire.

Crowds, prices and when to book
Visitor numbers follow a fairly predictable calendar: very high from mid-June to the end of August, strong in April-May (spring and public holiday bridges), reasonable in September-October, and lower from November to March excluding carnival and holidays.
- Hotels and rentals: the best rates are found from May to mid-June and in September; in July-August, book several weeks, or even several months, ahead.
- Restaurants: in August, the terraces in the centre and in Vieux-Nice are full from 7:30pm; in September, it's easier to find a table.
- Transport: the tram is overcrowded at the end of the day in summer; mornings remain comfortable for sightseeing.
- Flights and trains: routes are most numerous from June to September, and therefore also the most expensive.

Events not to miss by season
- February: the Nice Carnival takes place from 9 to 28 February 2027, with parades, flower battles and the illuminated night parade: the highlight of Nice's winter.
- June: the Fête de la Musique, on 21 June, turns the city into a free stage.
- September: the European Heritage Days, on 19 and 20 September 2026, open normally closed sites for free.
- December: the Christmas markets and light displays enjoy mild weather and a calmer city.
Visiting Nice the rest of the year
Visiting Nice is pleasant all year thanks to its sunshine and mild temperatures, even in winter. You can even experience 25 °C in the middle of November, although swimming is out of the question.
Outside the season, mornings and evenings are cool before and after sunrise, but temperatures can rise to 17 °C in January on the seafront. The difference between shade and sun is more marked than in northern France: remember to pack both warm and light clothing.
The most unpredictable months are October and November: the weather can be mild and sunny or cool and rainy (these are also the wettest months of the year).
What to do when it rains in Nice
Showers are most frequent in October and November, but they are usually short. In bad weather, the city offers plenty of alternatives so you don't lose the day: the guide to sights and activities lists museums, covered markets and indoor outings, while the Cours Saleya stays lively even in the rain.
In winter, plan a backup: a museum day, with the Cimiez monastery and the Matisse Museum, both of which are best visited on overcast days.
