The short answer: the ideal time to visit Nice runs from May to September, with the best overall balance in June and September (warm weather, lighter crowds and lower prices than in full season). May is great for sightseeing and nature, July and August for swimming and nightlife, despite the crowds and higher prices.

Visiting Nice in May

Often one of the most beautiful months: generous sunshine, soft air (17 °C on average, up to 25 °C in the sun) and increasingly rare rainfall. The sea is still cool (17 °C): swimming is possible for the brave, but it is not the main point of a trip.

It is a perfect time for sightseeing and hiking: the museums and the hillside villages are still quiet. Tourists have not yet flooded the city and hotels remain affordable.

Visiting Nice in June

The best beach-and-sightseeing-and-price balance of the whole year. June promises summer: long days, sea water warming quickly (20 °C), pleasant beaches and still reasonable temperatures (20 °C average, 28 °C at the hottest point of the afternoon).

June's advantages over July-August: the water is still clean after the winter and the crowds have not yet peaked. It is the ideal moment to combine beaches, museums and trips to the hills without facing the rush.

Visiting Nice in July

High summer: exceptional weather, 24 °C sea, high UV index and a city fully committed to the tourist season. Outdoor culture events pile up and the nightlife is in full swing.

There are real downsides: intense heat (35 °C+ in the sun is not rare), record crowds, traffic jams and sharply rising hotel prices. If you do not cope well with heat or crowds, prefer June or September.

Visiting Nice in August

Excellent weather until mid-August, with the sea at its warmest (25 °C): it is the best swimming time of the year. From mid-August, temperatures soften slightly and a pleasant light breeze picks up along the shore.

Expect the same crowds as July: packed beaches, traffic jams and full restaurants. Prices stay at their peak until the last days of the month.

Visiting Nice in September

For many travellers, the best time to come: the back-to-school period sends crowds tumbling while the weather stays exceptional. Thermometers still reach around 30 °C, the sea stays at 23 °C and a soft breeze sets in.

Decisive advantages: hotel and transport prices drop strongly compared with July-August, and the beaches regain some space. One caveat: traffic jams near schools at the end of the afternoon.

Visiting Nice the rest of the year

Nice is pleasant to visit year-round thanks to its sunshine and mild temperatures, even in winter. You can even see 25 °C in November — although swimming is out of the question at that time of year.

Off season, mornings and evenings are cool around sunrise and sunset, but temperatures can rise to 17 °C by the sea in January. The shade-to-sun difference is greater than in northern Europe: pack both warm and light clothing.

The most unpredictable months are October and November: weather can be mild and sunny or cool and rainy (they are also the wettest months of the year). In February, the Nice Carnival is the great reason to discover the city outside the tourist season.
