Nice in winter: Christmas, mildness and mountains 1h30 away

Between the Christmas village, the mild climate and ski resorts an hour and a half away: Nice is also great in winter. Dates, ideas and good addresses 2026-2027.

Nice in winter is the Riviera's best-kept secret: 6-15°C, generous sunshine (300 sunny days a year), crowd-free museums, and the most beautiful Christmas market in southern France. And for skiers, the snow is an hour and a half away. Here's how to live the Niçois winter.

The Christmas market: the big event

Nice's Christmas village sets up on Place Masséna and in the Jardin Albert 1er, from late November to 31 December: about 100 chalets, the Ferris wheel, an ice rink and children's entertainment. Entrance is free (paid activities). The 2026 edition is announced from 28 November to 31 December.

Heading down towards the Cours Saleya, the chestnuts and mulled wine give Old Nice a postcard atmosphere found nowhere else on the coast.

The climate: mild, even in December

In November-December, mornings are cool (6-8°C) but afternoons often reach 14-15°C in the sun. About 790 mm of rain a year spread over a hundred days: showers pass quickly. A light coat and an umbrella are enough — sunny terraces are still a thing.

What to do in Nice in winter?

  • Museums: Matisse, Lascaris palace, Cimiez archaeology — without the summer queues;
  • Old Nice: the alleys are almost empty in the morning, and the Cours Saleya terraces catch the midday sun;
  • The hills: Castle Hill park and Mont-Boron offer clear views, sometimes even a light dusting of snow on the surrounding peaks;
  • The Carnival: the great February celebration (2027 theme announced: "Vive l'Amour") turns the Promenade into a giant stage.

And the snow, then?

Morning at the beach, afternoon on the slopes: that's Nice's speciality. Two major resorts are under 1h30 away:

  • Auron (1,600 m): the department's biggest domain, 135 km of slopes, 2026-2027 season from 6 December to 19 April;
  • Isola 2000 (2,000 m): 120 km of slopes, Italian border, guaranteed snow.

All six resorts of the destination are within two hours of the coast.

New Year's Eve

31 December in Nice: the traditional New Year's concert (at the Opéra or Acropolis, Strauss-Offenbach programme — booking recommended about 3 months ahead) and parties in Old Nice, which doesn't empty. The Christmas village stays open until evening.
