Safety for Tourists in Nice
Is Nice safe for solo travelers, women, or groups? This guide covers the real safety situation and the basic precautions that make a stay smooth and secure.
Excellent overall safety in Nice
Contrary to what the figures might suggest, Nice is a fairly safe city. Whether you are on the coast or in the city centre, as long as you follow the basic rules of common sense that apply to any large city in the world, you will be safe. The police are very visible.
As you will see below, however, there are certain neighbourhoods that are best avoided. These are the ones that "weigh down" the statistics: crime is very high in these areas.
Women travelling alone
Women travelling alone have no more to worry about than in any other tourist destination in Europe. Only provocative clothing might earn you comments from passers-by.
However, avoid walking alone at night at the end of the Promenade des Anglais. You could be mistaken for a prostitute!
Safety at the beach
We advise you to take only the bare minimum with you when you go swimming and to leave your valuables at the hotel.
Safety in the streets
As everywhere else, unless you venture into a small, dark, deserted and dubious alleyway in a remote neighbourhood, you will not be at risk walking around Nice at night.
At any time of day, do not display your valuables (jewellery, digital cameras, camcorders, etc.) or leave them unattended. It is important to note that the most common problems are snatch thefts on foot and by car. Tourists are the easiest targets.
Areas to avoid
There are two neighbourhoods that should be avoided at all costs. Only these two areas are considered to be truly "high-risk" in Nice. However, the risk of you visiting them is minimal due to their isolation and total lack of tourist interest.
The Arianne neighbourhood
Far from the centre and devoid of any tourist interest, the Arianne neighbourhood is the most dangerous. Never go there, whether alone or in a group, by car or on foot. If you ever find yourself there by mistake, avoid driving with your windows open and try to get back to the centre quickly. Avoid stopping there.
Many Nice residents have never set foot there. Even the police are reluctant to venture there... This neighbourhood is the subject of numerous news items in the city's newspapers.
The Moulins neighbourhood
Avoid walking around the Les Moulins neighbourhood after dark. In any case, avoid going into the heart of the neighbourhood at any time of day. This area is not really dangerous, but it can make you feel unsafe.
