Old Nice (Vieux Nice): Complete Walking Guide

Old Nice
Old Nice is the historical and tourist heart of the city, lively by day and night, and a must-see during any stay.
General overview of Old Nice
Old Nice, nicknamed "the Old Town" by locals, has a real medieval village atmosphere. Teeming with people, the neighbourhood is lively and can only be visited on foot.
In summer, it is even more enjoyable as it is generally cooler than elsewhere. Why? The proximity of the houses and their height create narrow, shaded streets where the light breeze from the sea penetrates and acts as natural air conditioning.
A food lover's paradise
The explosion of colours, mainly yellow and red on the façades, is complemented by the scent of spices and food. In the narrow streets of Old Nice, you will find all kinds of artisan food shops: fresh pasta makers, Niçois dish makers, butchers, bakeries, grocery stores, as well as countless restaurants, cafés, wine bars, ice cream parlours, etc. Stop at one of the traditional biscuit factories or one of the restaurants serving Nice specialities, you won't be disappointed. One thing is certain: the walk will make you hungry!
A hub for works of art
In addition to these shops, you will find a number of boutiques run by painters, designers, sculptors, and clothing and jewellery designers. There's nothing like a stroll through Old Nice to find a unique piece of art or discover new artists.
A relaxed shopping destination
The old town also has many interior design and chic and trendy clothing shops, all in a picturesque setting that makes shopping enjoyable even for gentlemen! Some major brands have shops here, but most are independent.
The ideal place to go out
At night, this is where the locals meet. Old Nice is the city's number one nightlife spot. What could be more enjoyable than heading out to this huge pedestrian area filled with pubs, restaurants and nightclubs?
Practical information
Never, EVER drive into Old Nice. The few tourists who try to do so spend hours trying to get out and often damage their vehicles.
Get there by public transport, on foot or by bike (in which case, park on Cours Saleya or Place du Palais de Justice). If you have come by car, the simplest solution is to park in one of the underground car parks, which are subject to a charge.
