Nice

Which option suits your stay?

An organised tour is mainly useful for getting your bearings at the start of a stay. The bus gives an overview with the option to hop off; the Segway turns sightseeing into an activity; the e-bike opens up views of the coastline. The little train offers a shorter, seated outing. These options do not offer the same experience: first decide what you want to see, then choose the vehicle.

To explore the narrow lanes, hear more about Nice's history or taste its specialities, see instead our guide to walking and food tours. And if you are planning your whole day, start from our selection of things to do in Nice.

The sightseeing bus: a first look at your own pace

The hop-on hop-off tourist bus suits you if you want to see several neighbourhoods without planning each journey. You can stay on board for a first overview, then get off at the stops that interest you. The option offered on GetYourGuide is valid for one or two days: compare its validity period with the time you actually have during your stay.

Its appeal lies in the commentary and the views, especially from the open upper deck. It does not always replace a walk: the lanes of Vieux-Nice are best discovered on foot. Check the current route, the last departure and the frequency before planning several stops. Bring sun cream and expect wind on the upper deck; if you use a wheelchair or pushchair, confirm the arrangements with the operator.

The tourist ticket is separate from the Lignes d'Azur passes for the tram and city bus. Our guide to the little train and sightseeing bus provides more details on these two ways of sightseeing.

Segway: a fun guided ride

The Segway suits those who want a guided tour with a bit of technical fun on the side. The ride begins with a short introduction: you learn to move forward, turn and stop before following the guide. For a first experience, Mobilboard's discovery route runs along the seafront and through the historic centre; the exact route depends on the option you choose.

It is not suitable for every child, nor is it guaranteed to be comfortable for anyone with balance difficulties. Mobilboard requires a minimum age of 14 and a weight between 45 and 118 kg for its Segway tours. The conditions of the booked offer prevail: also check the rules for accompanying minors and any other restrictions. The company asks you to arrive before the departure time, at 2 rue Halévy, near the Promenade des Anglais.

Choose this option for the activity as much as for the sightseeing. If your goal is to stop often in shops or sit at a café terrace, a walk on foot will give you more freedom.

E-bike: panoramas beyond the centre

A guided e-bike outing is worth considering if you want to link Nice with the coastal scenery and get some height. The electric assist helps on the climbs, but it does not remove the need to ride confidently or the stretches on the road. The panoramic ride offered by Mobilboard includes viewpoints over Villefranche-sur-Mer: compare this kind of route with a simple city loop before booking.

Ask about the required skill level, the duration, the minimum size and any participation restrictions. Do not assume that an e-bike makes the tour suitable for a young child or for any level of fitness. Comfortable shoes, water and sun protection make the outing more pleasant. The meeting point and options, such as a swimming break, depend on the time slot you choose.

Prefer to go without a group? Our guide to cycling in Nice and bike hire explains the difference between renting alone and going on a guided ride. The second spares you from planning the route; the first lets you choose your own stops.

The electric little train: a shorter, seated trip

The France Voguette little train is another option, especially if a long walk does not suit your group. Departures are from the Promenade des Anglais, near the Jardin Albert Ier. The tourist office lists two routes: the city centre in about 45 minutes, or the Colline du Château in about 50 minutes with a stop at the viewpoint.

This works differently from a hop-on hop-off bus: you choose a route for a ride, without organising a series of stops and reboardings. Families may therefore prefer this shorter format. Check departures, available seats, the route price and wheelchair access directly. For this option, visit the France Voguette website.

On foot, by boat or on a private tour: other options

You do not need a vehicle to discover Nice with someone who knows the city. A walking tour helps you understand Vieux-Nice, while a food itinerary combines discovery and tastings. A private tour may suit a group that wants a particular pace; compare what is actually included rather than just the price per person.

To see the coastline from the water, see boat trips departing from Nice. Pay attention to the departure port: some nearby cruises start from Villefranche. A boat trip and a city tour complement each other; neither covers all the highlights on its own.

Booking once you have chosen your option

Compare the bus, the Segway ride and the e-bike outing below. Photos and reviews come directly from GetYourGuide; open each listing to check the price, time slot, language, meeting point and the conditions of the option you choose. These links are partner links: a booking may earn niceTrotter a commission.

  • With young children: start with the conditions for the little train or the bus; the Segway has a minimum age.
  • With little time: also count the journey to the meeting point and the introduction, not just the tour time.
  • For a flexible stay: check the cancellation rules and possible changes due to the weather.
  • For a real conversation with the guide: check the language and group size. An audio guide and an accompanying guide do not provide the same service.

Book the option that makes your day easier. There is no need to buy several tours covering the same centre: keep time to wander freely around the neighbourhood you enjoyed most.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tourist bus accept Lignes d'Azur tickets?

Can children ride a Segway?

The Mobilboard tour we looked at is offered from age 14, with weight and supervision conditions. Check the restrictions for your option before booking.

Is the e-bike suitable for everyone?

You need to be able to ride with confidence. The outings have participation criteria and may use roads: check the listing for your route.

Which tour should I choose to walk less?

The little train or the bus can suit a seated sightseeing experience. Ask about access conditions if you are travelling with a wheelchair, and plan your journey to the departure point.
