Cycling in Nice: bike lanes, bike-share and rental
Nice is a great city to explore by bike: more than 7 km of cycle lane along the Promenade des Anglais, a growing network and two bike-share operators since 2024. Here are the routes to know, the rental shops, the prices and the rules, bearing in mind that Vélobleu has not existed since February 2024.
Nice has discovered a taste for cycling: the Promenade des Anglais has one of the busiest bike lanes in France, the network is expanding under the Plan Vélo, and bike-share has been provided by two private operators since 2024.
Key point from the outset: Vélobleu has not existed since February 2024: articles still announcing "Vélobleu 2026" are out of date. Here are the lanes, the rental shops and the rules, along with our complete guide to Nice.
Bike-share: Lime and Pony
Vélobleu ended in February 2024, when its public service delegation expired. The Métropole now relies on Lime (1,000 100% electric bikes) and Pony (800 two-seater e-bikes and 200 mechanical bikes). Nearly 2,000 bikes, 90% of them electric, available 24/7.
The service covers 13 communes: Nice, Cagnes-sur-Mer, Saint-Laurent-du-Var, Beaulieu, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Villefranche, Vence, Carros, La Trinité, La Gaude, Saint-André-de-la-Roche, Drap and Saint-Jeannet. An extension was announced in August 2026 to Villefranche-sur-Mer (40 bikes, 5 stations), from Antibes to Beaulieu.
- Minimum age: 16 with Pony, 18 with Lime.
- Parking: 250 mandatory zones (marked with a "blue P"); leaving a bike outside a zone incurs a penalty.
- Pony prices: €1 to unlock + €0.26/min; passes 20 min €2.99, 60 min €5.99, 200 min €19.99, 300 min €29.99, 1,000 min €89.99.
- Lime prices: €1 to unlock + around €0.23 to €0.26/min depending on the zone (see the app); pass around €5.99/30 min.
Check prices and the parking zone in the app before unlocking.
Lanes and infrastructure
- Promenade des Anglais: more than 7 km of lane, around 4,000 trips a day (~1.5 million a year), one of the busiest cycling routes in France.
- Promenade du Paillon 2: delivered on 18 October 2025, with a two-way lane on either side of the park, extended along avenue Félix Faure and towards Saint-Jean-Baptiste, plus a lane on place Yves Klein.
- Boulevards Jean-Jaurès and Risso: upgraded, but the removal of the boulevard Risso lane is contested (a legal challenge by Nice à Vélo). A network in flux with frequent works: check your route before setting off.
- Route de Turin: the two-way Nice (Liserons)-La Trinité lane is announced, but its 2026 status is not confirmed: a section "under construction or to be checked".
- Plan Vélo 2021-2026: €20m, 29 inflation/repair stations, 18 charging stations, 38 counters; +13.5% cycling use per kilometre of infrastructure between May 2021 and May 2024.
The network map is available free in the Métropole's Géovélo app, and online at nicecotedazur.org. There is talk of reopening the Congrès tunnel to cars, but it is only at the idea stage.
Bike rental
Several rental shops offer city bikes, e-bikes, children's bikes and accessories by the day. Benchmarks observed in September 2026:
- Nice Bike: city bike €19.50/24h; e-bike €39/24h; children's bike €12.50/24h; trailer €17.50/24h; helmet or basket €2.50, prices at nicebike.fr.

- NiceCity: 40 rue de la Buffa: e-bike 2 h €20, 4 h €30, day €40 (€600 deposit).
- Beach Bikes: 8 bd Lech Walesa: rental open from April to September.
- Mobilboard Nice: e-bike from €20.
- TER ZOU! + Brompton: folding bike for long-term rental at €41/month, the official offer for combining train and bike.
- Cargo bikes: no rental shop we can recommend so far, ask the shops above.
For a day out, compare: rental shops include the lock, sometimes the helmet.
Rules and safety
- Bike: helmets are compulsory for under-12s and strongly recommended for everyone.
- Scooters and e-scooters (EDPM): minimum age 14, maximum 25 km/h, no pavements, no passengers, civil liability insurance compulsory, no earphones or phone in hand.
- In Nice: a municipal decree of 31 October 2025 made helmets compulsory for e-scooters from 1 November 2025 to 1 March 2026 (renewal announced but not confirmed); fine of €35. A seasonal measure: check before setting off.
- Prohibitions: riding in pedestrian areas (Masséna, Vieux-Nice, Jean-Médecin, gare du Sud) and on tram tracks.
Also plan for lights and a good lock: two essentials in the city. For public transport, see our guide Trams and buses in Nice: lines, fares and maps.
Parking and maintaining your bike
- Maison du Vélo: 12 rue de Suisse (tram T1, Gare Thiers stop): Viavélo community workshop, Bicycode marking on Mondays from 3pm to 5pm, membership €20/year, second-hand exchanges and a secure room. Information at nicecotedazur.org.
- Secure shelters at stations: free, accessible with the ZOU! travel card, by online booking.
- On board TER trains: reserving a bike space is compulsory and chargeable on certain busy lines (summer); bikes are sometimes refused on board. Station shelters are then a good alternative.
The Plan Vélo aims for 11,000 parking spaces; meanwhile, a good lock remains the best protection.
