Beach clubs and beaches of Cannes: La Croisette, Juan-les-Pins

«Cannes is expensive»: true for the beach clubs on La Croisette, not for the rest. The city has 7.6 km of beaches along its 15 km of coastline, including 13 free public beaches, one run by the city and 33 licensed concessions. The same coastline works out at €0, or with paid service and comfort, depending on where you sit. Here is how to choose.

Public beaches or beach clubs: how it works

On the French Riviera the beach is always open to the public: what you pay for is the service.

• Public beach: free and open access, you bring your towel. Showers and toilets depending on the area, no official sunbeds;
• Municipal beach: the city rents out sunbeds and parasols itself at public prices;
• Beach club (licensed beach): a venue attached to a hotel or independent, with sunbeds, restaurant and beach service. Each club sets its own prices, which vary with the season and the service: contact the venue before you go, the official list of concessions is published by Cannes city hall.

La Croisette beach by beach

Boulevard de la Croisette runs from the Palais des Festivals to the point, with public and private beaches following one another, separated only by wooden gangways.

• Zamenhof beach (municipal): next to the Martinez, opposite kiosk no. 6. Open from 15 June to 15 September, 8.30 am-6.30 pm. Sunlounger €6.50 per half day and €9 per day, parasol €4.50 and €8, free for children aged 0-9. Beach towels required, supervised beach;
• La Croisette public beaches: Plage du Casino, Plage Macé, Square Verdun, Palm Beach… free, open all year, with showers;
• The beach clubs: they hold the concessions between the public beaches, right in front of the grand hotels. Party atmosphere on one side, calm on the other: book or try your luck, depending on the venue;
• Handiplage: at the pointe Croisette, free and labelled for accessible bathing in season.

Juan-les-Pins: the cheaper option

In Antibes, Juan-les-Pins gives you the same water with a little less glamour: free beaches around the Pinède, plus two municipal beaches run by the town.

• Lutétia beach (boulevard du Littoral) and Square Gould (Pinède): open from 1 June to 15 September, 10 am-7 pm. Sunbed €12 per day in June and September, €20 per day in July-August (€12 per half day), parasol €5. Online booking, two sunbeds per transaction, up to 48 hours ahead, €1 booking fee;
• Free beaches: between the two municipal beaches and around the Pinède, access stays free;
• Getting there: Juan-les-Pins station is on the Nice-Ventimiglia TER line.

How to book a sunbed

• Municipal beach: online booking required or strongly advised, half-day slots, limited capacity. In high season, book 48 hours ahead;
• Beach club: booking goes directly to the venue, usually by phone or on its site. Prices and conditions (minimum spend, morning or afternoon slot) vary from one club to the next;
• No booking: public beaches remain the safest bet on a busy day. Arrive early, with water, sunscreen and your own towel.

Getting from Nice to Cannes

• Train: TER trains link Nice-Ville to Cannes in 27 minutes minimum, about 36 minutes on average, with close to 90 journeys a day and tickets from €10. Cannes station is a few hundred metres from La Croisette;
• Juan-les-Pins: allow about 20 minutes by train from Nice (65 journeys a day, tickets from €7);
• By car: the A8 motorway serves Cannes, but seafront parking is scarce and expensive in season. For a beach day, the train is simpler;
• Once there: the local bus network links the western beaches (La Bocca) to La Croisette.
