Let's say it right away: if you come to Nice and you're interested in cultural visits, the Matisse Museum is an absolute must-see.

It presents the artistic evolution of Henri Matisse, his advances and research in the field of colour and graphic design, from his first paintings in 1890 to the cut-out gouaches of his later years.

The museum's permanent collection includes nearly 70 paintings and cut-out gouaches, more than 200 drawings, engravings, almost all of the artist's sculptures, illustrated books, around a hundred photographs and objects that belonged to the painter. In short, it has everything!

Since 1963, the museum has been located in the Villa des Arènes, in the Parc des Arènes de Cimiez. You can relax and picnic in the gardens before or after your visit. You can also combine your visit with a tour of the Arènes de Cimiez, the Monastery of Cimiez and the Boulevard de Cimiez.

Why we love this museum (our local perspective)

The Matisse Museum is a visit we recommend if you want to "breathe" a little: Cimiez is a quieter, greener neighbourhood, and the whole complex (museum + park + arenas) is a real break from the hustle and bustle.

If you only visit one museum in Nice and you like painting, Matisse is an excellent choice. And if you're staying for several days, it's almost a must-see.

Combine with (practical tip)

  • The Cimiez Arena right next door.
  • A stroll through Cimiez: gardens, tranquillity, and another side of Nice.
