Driving to Nice: A8 Motorway & Route Guide

French highways are generally in very good condition. Nice is accessible via the A8 motorway, and the Paris to Nice drive takes about nine hours.

A few points to note

Toll motorways

In France, motorways are toll roads, and those in the south are among the most expensive in the country. Make sure you calculate your costs before you set off using the free Viamichelin route planner, which will tell you exactly how much you will need to pay for tolls and fuel. Unlike in some European countries, motorways are paid for each time you use them, rather than once a year by purchasing a vignette.
Please also note that the city has the only toll ring road network in France.

Motorway tolls are halved for motorcycles.

Traffic jams

Traffic jams are common during the peak tourist season in July and August on the motorways leading to Nice and neighbouring towns due to the high concentration of tourist attractions such as Cannes, Villefranche-sur-Mer, Saint Jean Cap-Ferrat, Monaco, Menton and, of course, northern Italy. Be sure to check the traffic forecast on the Bison Futé website before setting off.

Speed cameras

Be aware that there are numerous automatic speed cameras on the A8 motorway between Fréjus and Nice, located on sections where the speed limit is 110 km/h instead of 130 km/h.

Similarly, once you arrive in Nice, watch out for the automatic speed camera on the Promenade des Anglais near the airport, as well as the one on the Route Nationale 202. Both must be passed at a maximum speed of 70 km/h.

Beautiful scenery

The rest areas on the A8 motorway often offer beautiful views, so don't hesitate to stop there for a break and admire the scenery. We particularly recommend stopping at the "Piccolaret" rest area for a panoramic view of the city of Cannes.

Take the appropriate motorway exit

There are five motorway exits leading to the city. Choose the most appropriate one depending on your destination:

  • No. 50: Promenade des Anglais
  • No. 51: Saint-Augustin
  • No. 52: Saint-Isidore
  • No. 54: Nice Nord
  • No. 55: Nice East

This will help you avoid many traffic jams. Crossing the city from west to east can take over an hour during rush hour!
